One of the most fun things I've done as a volunteer with Paballo ya Batho is helping them buy school shoes and uniforms for poor schoolchildren, just after the start of term. Money for these gifts was provided by children from Marple church community in Stockport, England.
The children were staying on the west side of town, in a surreal large industrial building that had been converted to provide simple low-cost accomodation. Some of the children (above) from the nursery at the Methodist church lived there, so first of all, we dropped them off, then returned to a JET store in town with a bus full of older children.
first of all, we found some school shoes
buying socks and other clothes took a while...
... while those who were ready took some time to pose
Finally, we negotiated a discount and made off with a huge bag of goodies.
