Glad to find some Kanabars on the net! And Chandaranas too. I'm a Kanabar and my mother was a Chandarana!

Anyway, about the origin of the surname Kanabar. I heard it from my grandmother about 20 years ago.

About 9-10 generations ago, a person by the name of Kanabhai, (or Kahbhai) had 12 sons or children. In Gujarati, 12 is "bar" - so the villagers called them - "Kana na bar" as a group. Over time this was transformed to Kanabar.

I heard the same story from my Grandfather's distant cousin too.

There is a small town in india where all the kanabars originate from. Some how all the kanabars in the world are related. I know many people have the same surname and they are not related at all. Even if you dig into their past, there will me no signs that they are related. But in the Kanabar tree all of are. I hope all kanabars keep in contact. Atleast try to familiarize with each other. To me it is a good thing.

My name is Mishal Kanabar. My dad is Kishor kanabar, and this site is wicked intense. This is so cool that our whole family tree is on the web.

It is indeed nice to know that all us Kanabars are one big family so let us all chip in to see where in our tree we belong. As far as I am aware my grandfather originated from Hati na Madia. may be some others recognise this name so help. As we are missing so many links any little information will be useful.
