The history and origins of KATARIA'S is a very proud one. The name KATARIA is derived from the word 'KATAR': KATAR was a weapon in the form of a very lethal sword used many centuries ago in battles across the Indian Sub-Continent originating in Kashmir. It is a Sub-Tribe of the main Gujjar Tribe and is known as the 'Warrior Clan'. Thus, KATARIA = "The People of the Sword". Its Aryan origins are due to its geographical originality (as Kashmiris are an Aryan race). The majority are tall, strong, fair and very fierce (hot-headed).
You will find KATARIA's in many parts of Kashmir, India and Pakistan. There are a huge number in the Indian and Pakistan Punjab. Srinigar, Rajouri and Poonch (in Kashmir). Azad Kashmir, and in major cities across Pakistan and India. The reason for their spread is due to their exceptional talents as Warriors (fighters), thus, the Tribe expanded with successive victories. For this reason you will find Kataria's in Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. I am aware myself, of big and powerful KATARIA colonies in Rawalpindi and Multan, with the grace of God, wherever they are, they are strong! I myself am a Muslim KATARIA living in Britain. We are from Azad Kashmir, but originate from Occupied Kashmir, District Poonch, Town Sadhroon. My Ancestors (Forefathers) remained as Royal Guards- Knights for the Raj of Kashmir, something that required not only courage, but intelligence and aptitude. There is an old saying: 'a KATARIA will never give a pinch for a punch'. A once, critic and enemy of the KATARIA clan admitted that although they were very hot-headed, they were just as romantic. Something I can believe-Trust me!

It's nice to see information regarding the history of your tribe on the internet-Being a KATARIA, I am more delighted to see the information relayed in a true and authentic form, more so, as to the one that I am aware of.
The tribe did derive its name from a lethal 'sword' like weapon, making them the: "The People of the Sword". Originating from Kashmir, I am happy to have read the information given by Tariq! However, we are KATARIA'S from the Rajouri district, Town Dhangri!! As you know Rajouri is the next district bordering Poonch. There are also many KATARIA'S in parts of India and Pakistan, especially, in the Punjab of both sides and Northern areas. It is the sub-tribe of the main Gujjar tribe. Thank you.
