I am Amyn Lakhani
I am a migrant from India now residing in Pakistan.
I was told by my grandmother (totally illiterate) that Lakhani means from Lakhan. She could not explain where is this Lakhan. But managed to teach me the names of my great great grandfathers reaching upto Mr. Lakhani (eighth generation back) who was residing in Gujrat, India.
I would appreciate any info related to the origin of Lakhani

My name is Mansoor Lakhani. I was born in Pakistan to a Sunni Lakhani family. I know there are lot of Islameeli Lakhanis in Pakistan, but we are not related to them in anyway.

Anyway, according to my grandfather my ancestors who resided in India shared the last name of Lakhan. Then some Saint from Persia moved to India and converted many followers of Hinduism to Islam. Those members of the Lakhan family that converted changed their last name to Lakhani to distinguish themselves from those who did not convert. Well, ours was the family that converted and that is why we ended up with this last name "Lakhani".

Originally Lakhani is a Lohana Hindu caste name, the muslim Lakhani's are descendants of Hindu Lakhani ancestors that converted to Islam. The origin of a place called Lakhan in Iran is probably true also as India streched that far in the ancient world and Lakhani being a Lohana name was a Kshtryia caste that consisted of warriors and rulers that ruled many places in the old world including the Punjab and Afhganistan and Sindh until the hordes of muslims and others destroted the ancient lands.
