GERMPLASM CONSERVATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF PARKIA BIGLOBOSA (JACQ.) BENTH FOR MULTIPURPOSE USE

Objectives

The main objectives of the project are as follows :

F
To conserve the germplasm of Parkia biglobosa.

F
To improve the species by selection and breeding.

F
To promote the tree for multipurpose use in agroforestry practices.

Activities

The key activities are :

*
Collection of Parkia biglobosa seed by the Centre National de Semences Forestière (CNSF), Burkina Faso in the following countries : Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Central Africa, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo, seed from Nigeria will be collected by the Forest Research Institute, Nigeria (FRIN);

*
Establishment of a central seed storage facility at CNSF for ex situ conservation of the germplasm of P. biglobosa;

*
Phenotypic observations of the mother trees to assess clinal variation within the species (CNSF and FRIN);

*
Investigation of the genetic diversity of P. biglobosa throughout its natural range, by establishing the inheritance of 15-20 enzymatic systems using electrophoresis techniques : a Ph.D. project supervised by Dr. Hélène Joly (Centre Technique Forestière Tropical, France) and Prof. van der Maesen (Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands),

*
Investigation of population status at study sites in protected areas and intensively farmed areas : a Ph.D project supervised by Dr. John Hall (School of Agricultural and Forest Sciences (SAFS), University of Wales, Bangor, UK);

*
Development of vegetative propagation and tissue culture techniques, and induction of precocious flowering (SAFS);

*
A socio-economic survey to elicit indigenous knowledge of the management and utilisation of the tree by the local people, co-ordinated by SAFS;

*
Field investigations of nitrogen fixing capability and mycorrhizal associations, and controlled greenhouse experiments using isolates of root symbionts (SAFS);

*
Development of multi-trait selection criteria using information gained from phenotypic observations, the socio-economic survey and determination of heritable traits through electrophoresis techniques (SAFS);

*
Provenance evaluation trials at three sites in Nigeria (Shaki, Afaka and Kano) by FRIN, and three in Burkina Faso (Fada, Bobo and Gonse) by CNSF.

Expected outcome

Conservation of germplasm, throughout the natural range of Parkia biglobosa. Improvement of the species through provenance evaluation, achieved by a combination of traditional and innovative methods. Effective methods of propagation to enable dissemination of planting stock to local people. Production of a scientific monograph of the species and supporting extension material.
