EXTRACTIVISM IN CENTRAL AMAZONIA : VIABILITY AND OPTIMIZATION

Objectives

The main objectives are :

F
To collect biological and ecological data on the different non timber forest products exploited in the region.

F
To describe the production practices and evaluate their impacts on the vegetation.

F
To document the place of extractivism within different kinds of production systems worked out by the forest dwellers and how it is linked with other subsistence and/or commercial activities.

F
To evaluate the ways of improving the production of these products, changing from extractivism towards agroforestry.

Activities

Field activities (Brazil and Ecuador)

*
Extractive activities are analyzed in different regions within a wide range of ecological and socio-economical conditions. Observations are made at different biological, ecological and sociological levels.

*
Concerning Brazil nuts, a sub-project deals with nutrients cycles under natural and plantation conditions.

Laboratory activities

*
With the change of the production practices from extractivism towards agroforestry in mind, it is necessary to better understand the problems of germination. Therefore, different conditions of seeds conservation and germination are tested at INPA.

Expected outcome

Extractivism cannot be reduced to an archaic way of managing forest resources nor to the best model in developing the region. Analyzing the diversity of the situations, the flexibility of extractivism and the part of these activities in the production systems will permit to point out the valuable aspects as well as the limits of these activities, on the ecological and the socio-economical points of view. Results should permit to improve the production systems of the forest dwellers.
