Title :Forest conserv. & manag. in Nghe An Province
Description :The project area covers 12 communes with about 50 villages in the 3 districts of Tong Dong, Con Cuong and Anh Son in Nhge An province. About 8.250 families (ca 45.000 inhabitants) live in the buffer zone. The majority of people in the Pu Mat project area is engaged in agriculture. The project will last for six years including an initial period which will be necessary to establish the project's logistical aspects.

The project will focus primarily on the population in the buffer zone but will also have some impact on the forest administration, extension service and reserve management staff and the management of state forest enterprises. The population in the buffer zone with special attention given to ethnic minorities and women, will be supported to secure the need for food, wood and cash income.
The forestry personnel on provincial, district and commune level will receive training and attend workshops to increase their capacity for effective planning, implementation and control of forest management activities. Special emphasis will be given to strengthen the extension service to upland farmers. The management staff of forest enterprises shall be reoriented from the exploitation of resources to the sustainable management of the forest and shall receive training in relevant aspects of forest management.
Objectives :To reduce the destruction and degradation of forest resources in the Pu Mat nature reserve including its buffer zone.
Justification :In the recent years the forest policy in Vietnam has shifted from the setting of production targets to a more strategic planning focusing on forest protection and socio-economic benefits for the population.

Agricultural land in the buffer zone is limited so the farmers have to clear 1.500 ha of forest each year for additional land and income. The succesful conservation of the Pu Mat Nature Reserve will enable the population to manage themselves from their resources in a sustainable way.

The conservation of the Pu Mat Nature Reserve wil have various positive effects on the environment. Tropical moist forest habitats in the reserve play an important role in regulating the behaviour of the local water drainage systems.
