Situated in North
Sumatra and Aceh provinces, The Leuser Ecosystem covers almost two
million hectares. It is probably the last place in the world where
one can find elephants, rhinos, tigers, clouded leopards and orang
utan living in same area.
However, population
encroachment, massive logging and others pressure are a constant
danger to this unique ecosystem and make strong conservation
efforts an urgent necessity. The project aims to conserve the
Leuser Ecosystem by establiching an expanded Leuser National Park,
while simultaneusly helping to develop surrounding areas and
creating intermediate buffer zones.
To achieve this,
the project aims to:
1. stabilize wildlife areas and reduce
conflict
2. develop
appropriate economic activities and infrastructure around the
periphery, including eco-tourism
3. carry out an
applied research and monitoring programme, and
4. build up a
programme of awareness and support with local partners
Operations started in 1996 and will continue to 2003. Project
budget is EUR 50.5 million, of which EU is contributing a grant of
EUR 32.5 million.
