A. Objectif de l'action envisagée :
To develop operational sustainability assessment tools; to improve key areas where existing criteria and indicators have been found to be deficient; to contribute towards the development of a system to evaluate the sustainability of forest management.

B. Description :
- developing cost-effective, transparent and practical sustainability assessment methods based on criteria and indicators, selected as being suitable after the first phase

- developing operational indicators for areas where shortcomings have been identified during the first phase (social dimension / biodiversity and environmental services of forest ecosystems)

- testing criteria and indicators in forest management by local communities

- developing transparent effective methods for scoring, weighting and resolving evaluation conflicts in order to arrive at decisions in a transparent, acceptable manner.


C. Justification :
The results of the first phase indicate that there is a need for further research in order to develop a practical and viable instrument for the assessment of sustainability based criteria and indicators and to fill gaps in the area of the project components mentioned above.

D. Modalités d'exécution :
The Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is an autonomous international institute conducting research to improve productivity and sustainability of forest use.
