A. Objectif de l'action envisagée :
To promote the generation and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge withal for the conservation and sustainable development of the Amazon region (including the Atlantic Forests).

B. Description :
A new call for proposals (01/97) will be addressed to scientific institutions and this constitutes the basis for implementation of the PPD. It has been decided to include a new sector called Environmentally-Sound Infrastructure. Four specific calls will be included: Researches into Amazon Ecosystems, Technologies for the Sustainable Development in Amazonia, Environmentally-Sound Infrastructure, Enhancement of the quality of life in the Amazon Region.

C. Justification :
The Brazilian Amazonia consists of the largest unbroken tract of rain forest on our planet. It provides 20% of global freshwater run-off into the world's oceans, they are a major carbon reserve and its destruction causes the release of green-house gases which affect global climate.
The PPD approaches Amazon environmental issues through scientific research slanted towards sustainable development. Its outputs will be an important contribution to the conservation and sustainable development of this important biome.

D. Modalités d'exécution :
Funding under this project will cover primarily the costs of direct research.

E. Coût et structure de financement :
Total cost amounts to 5,250 MECU. They will be shared by the European Commission (5 MECU) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (250.000 ECU).
