Located in South
Sumatra province, the Forest Fire Prevention and Control project
is developing an integrated forest fire management system with
government, community and commercial interests.
More specifically it aims to :
1. Analyse the
causes of land and forest fire in the province.
2. Establish operational
procedures for fire prevention and control, taking into account
their major causes and set up structures for active participation
of local populations in close cooperation with national and
provincial authorities.
3. Provide hardware
and software and train local experts to receive and process
images from the NOAA satellite system for the detection of fire
"hot spot".
Starting in 1995,
the project runs until Desember 1999. A second phase project
is being considered.
EU is contributing a EUR 4.1 million grant to the project budget
of EUR 4.6 million.
