A. Objectif de l'action envisagée :
To improve the socio-economic security of participating communities living in the buffer zone in a manner which safeguards the existing natural resources and biodiversity of the Royal Bardia National Park.
Local communities living in Bardia National Part buffer zone will be involved in park management and their standards of living will be improved through sustainable agriculture and other inputs.

B. Description :
Components:
- Institutional coordination between stakeholders
- Local community natural resource management
- Environmentally sustainable agriculture
- Women and landless groups' involvement in local development processes

C. Justification :
The Royal Bardia National Park (RBNP) lies in the southwestern Terai, in the Bheri Zone and covers 96,800 ha. Pressure from human activity in the area has reduced biodiversity and by the end of the century the terrestrial and aquatic resources could be irreparably damaged. The two main threats are grazing and fuelwood extraction although new building and wildlife poaching also play a role. Poverty is the root cause of the environmental problems in the area, due to a large number of complex and interrelated problems. The project will address the problems of declining natural resource base, illiteracy and to some extent health, whilst indirectly addressing the problems of landlessness and social inequity. Conflict between local people and park management has also arisen, which will be addressed by facilitating better understanding and collaboration. Ultimately the project will help release human pressure on Bardia National Park core area (96.800 ha) which is 70% forested with an original ecosystem still relatively undisturbed.

D. Modalités d'exécution :
CARE DENMARK will execute the project through a direct subvention contract with the EC. CARE DENMARK is a subsidiary of CARE INTERNATIONAL a leading NGO in the field of sustainable development.
