Rio Bravo experimental Forestry and Micropropagation Project by World Wide Land Conservation Trust (WWLCT) (1994)
Objectives:
To develop environmentally sound and economically viable revenue-earning activities in the field of forestry and plant propagation on the Rio Bravo Conservation and management Area (RBCMA).
Results:
- The development of approaches for economically viable forest land use that retains the full range of environmental values of the areas;
- The revenues from the economic activities developed through the project will be reinvested in conservation management of the RBCMA. The Project thus contributes to the long-term financial self-reliance of this important conservation area, and also demonstrate an innovative support mechanism for conservation actions;
- To develop approaches that may be used to restore wild populations, from mahoganies to orchis, that have been depleted in Belize through unsustainable extraction;
- To support the institutional strengthening of a local organisation (NGO), the "Programme For Belize" and to make a major contribution to its professional training programme; to strengthen the education and tourism programmes undertaken by PFB on the RBCMA.
- To help the development of new approaches to rejuvenate the former and effectively create the latter. It thus makes a contribution to the national economy.
