Objectives:
To enable developing country partners:
- to improve conservation and sustainable development of forest resources;
- to gain better knowledge of the Community and Member States' contributions to the future of tropical forests and
- to facilitate better incorporation of experience from the developing countries where tropical forests are located.
Activities:
- The production of an EU Forestry Sourcebook, which will contain a chapter on each of the Member States' tropical forestry activities and strategies in the
forestry sector;
- The production of a series of EU Tropical Forestry Papers, which will go beyond the scope of the source book and provide analyses of differing approaches
which have been taken within Europe to solve some specific tropical forestry problems;
- The production of Rural Development Forestry Network papers and newsletters;
- The organisation of workshops and training sessions to provide opportunities for interaction between developing country partners, the Community and
member States;
- The establishment of a Tropical Forestry Projects Database.
Results expected:
1. Forestry Sourcebook. It addresses information needs of developing countries' governments, the non-European donor community, international fora, the
Commission and the Member States themselves;
2. EU Tropical Forestry Papers (print-run: 5000). They will be circulated to key planners and policy-makers in developing countries and in Europe, to bilateral
and multilateral funders and to a list of other professionals as determined by the EC;
3. Six mailings of the Rural Development Forestry Network to a maximum of 5000 networkers all over the world (in English, French and Spanish) will take
place over three years;
4. EC Forestry workshops in Europe: the first in year 1 and two smaller workshops in year 3;
5. Forestry Projects Database. Training and support in use of the project forms and data-base will be provided as soon as the system has been set up and
approved. Annual analyses of the database, providing data to be determined during the setting-up process, will be published with comment and suggestion for
the future.
