"Ségué Natural Forest Management Project - Mali" by Care International UK (1996)
Objectives:
The final objective of the project is to create suitable conditions by the year 2001 for the sustainable management of Ségué Forest in Koro Circle, which will permit 6,300 forest users to manage the forest resources and continue to draw their livelihood from the forest on a sustainable basis.
The achievement of this goal will be measured through the attainment of two intermediate objectives, as follows:
- To establish a sound legal and organizational basis involving 6,300 local users, for the sustainable management of Ségué Forest by 2001;
- To develop and begin implementation of a set of technical and management guidelines for the sustainable management and exploitation of natural resources in Ségué Forest by 6,300 forest users, by 2001.
Results:
Details of outputs can be found in the project logframe. The most significant outputs of the project in relation to intermediate objective no. 1 are the legal written agreements with the GRM, and the creation and establishment of the new natural resource management institutions in Ségué. These are both crucial to project success, as they represent the handing over of authority from the currently ineffective GRM organs to the revitalised community institutions representing the real forest users.
The main outputs in relation to the second intermediate goal are the management strategies and management plan, which will directly affect natural resources use by all forest users, and which will ensure the sustainable and economically profitable exploitation of the forest.
