"The Conservation of Key Biodiversity Sites in Madagascar" by Birdlife International (1996)
Objectives:
- To identify and prioritize the need for action at all important biodiversity areas, using birds as indicators, in Madagascar. To develop a conservation culture within Malagasy decision-makers, both current and future.
- To make available to Malagasy decision-makers detailed analyses of the important areas for the conservation of birds in Madagascar in the form of a book reviewing all current data,
- To disseminate the results of the analyses more widely, through promotion of the book, through presentation of the findings at national and international fora and through publication in the technical literature,
- To conduct field work in areas that are poorly or unknown for birds, in order that the distribution of Malagasy birds be better understood for conservation purposes,
- To train Malagasy field workers to conduct inventories of sites for their bird conservation potential,
- To train Malagasy laboratory researchers in the collation, entry and analysis of bird distributional data.
Results:
A major project output will be a book describing in detail the important sites for bird conservation in Madagascar. This will review the general site characteristics, ornithological importance, local levels of threat and conservation action recommended. In the process of producing this book, the project will undertake two main work themes - a data analysis and editing phase, and a fieldwork phase. |
