Title :Proyecto Quetzal
Description :- Technical study of the environment
- Environmental education
- Agroforestry programme
- Handicrafts programme
- Promotion of ecotourism
Objectives :The main objective is to protect the cloud forest as a habitat for the Quetzal by promoting sustainable agriculture and a rational use of the n&atural resources among the Kekchi people in Alta Varapaz, Guatemala.
Justification :Due to difficult access, the project area has been mantained as an island of cloud forest in an already severely degraded environment. Altough relatively small in absolute fifures, the area harbours a large concentration of Quetzals and has many other fauna and flora elements that have disappeared in the surrounding regions.
Execution :Asociación Amigos del Bosque is one of the oldest environmental action groups in Guatemala and has been active in this area since 1990 in association with otehr European funders. Its work is followed by the Comisión Nacional del Medio Ambiente which is an official institution of Guatemala and has explicitly supported this project.

The project proposal of AAB was presented to the EC by Pro Natura International, based in Paris, France. This organisation has broad experience with international cooperation . AAB agreed that Pro Natura take charge of all contacts with the EC servoces concerned.
