Title :Cons.&Comm.Mngmt. of Trop.For. in Alto Mayo, Peru
Description :The project will be composed of the following four components:

PROJECT COMPONENT OBJECTIVE
1. ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF FORESTRY RESOURCES Demonstration of forestry management and conservation activities that ensure the sustainable nature of the production.
2. DEVELOPMENT AND PROMOTION OF FORESTRY PRODUCTION WITH AGUARUNA FOREST PEOPLE The development of production alternatives that generate income and employment for the groups of indigenous people who live in the primary forest.
3. DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL-SCALE RURAL FORESTRY ENTERPRISES Diversified production in small-scale rural forestry companies based on the use of fast-growing trees from secondary forests.
4. DISSEMINATION AND INFLUENCE Wide-ranging dissemination of the results of the experience to promote similar programmes.

Objectives :This project aims to contribute to the conservation of the primary and secondary forests of Alto Mayo through the sustainable forest management for protection and production.
Justification :In spite of the growing national concern for tropical forest conservation, assistance from the international community is needed in order to address the urgent need for intervention. This project will address the need for sustainable community-based forest management in Alto Mayo, and will provide a model for other parts of the Amazon region. In this respect, the project is ideally suited to European Commission’s grant scheme, ‘Operations to Promote Tropical Forests’.All activities will be carried out with the full participation of the beneficiaries in both planning and execution. It is proposed to provide a 100% grant to ITDG - Peru for this project, as the following substantial financing has already secured for preparatory activities :

ú $ 15000 from the Spanish NGO Intermont
ú £ 11000 from the British Embassy in Lima
ú £ 5000 from local fund raising by ITDG in the UK
ú A 4x4 truck worth 20000 ECU put at disposition by ITDG - Perú
Execution :The project will be implemented by ITDG in partnership with PRO NATURALEZA, a Peruvian enviromental NGO. This organization specialises in conservation activities and sustainable use of resources. Established in 1984, Pro Naturaleza operates at a range of levels, from fieldwork to international forums, to promote sustainable development.

ITDG has also established cooperation agreements with the following institutions:
ú The Special Alto Mayo Project - PEAM, which will participate in the reforestation activities that will complement the project, through the maintenance and improvement of secondary forests.
ú Caritas-Moyobamba and its Food for Labour Project with poor campesino families in Alto Mayo. This organisation will help identify the beneficiaries involved in the transformation of timber.
ú ECCO-SELVA, a local network with many years of experience in working with the Aguaruna Forest People in Alto Mayo.
ú The National Network for Forestry Development-REDFOR, which will participate in the dissemination activities of the project.
