Title :Sust. Devt. & Comm.For.Mngmt. in PANACAM, Honduras
Description :1. To develop a human infrastructure of local leaders who will work in their buffer zone communities to improve food production, teach soil conservation techniques and how to protect local natural resources.

2. To educate and train farm families to increase food production & improve family incomes without destroying the environment.

3. To reduce the negative effect of market forces on individual farm families by providing grain storage facilities, thereby ensuring stable food supplies throughout the year and increased income.

4. To improve the health levels of farm families and to cut firewood consumption by half by replacing inefficient cooking stoves.

5. To regain/recover forest areas that have been slashed and burned.

6. To increase income levels & to generate jobs in surrounding communities by establishing micro-businesses enterprises with a focus on eco-tourism and timber production on a community basis.

7. To improve the level of environmental education of the communities and to create in them the desire to protect and preserve environmental resources.

8. To improve the community transportation & road infrastructure, especially for fire protection, and market access.
Objectives :To protect the watershed of the cloud forest in PANACAM through sustainable activities that lead to viable development in the communities surrounding the park, and to instill within the people the desire, ability and knowledge to improve their living conditions without further damage to the environment.
Justification :Since l950 Honduras has lost about 40% of its forest cover, mainly by traditional slash and burn agricultural practices, but also by firewood extraction. The expansion of hillside farming by poor farmers, which are 35-40% of the population, has caused significant soil erosion problems. Honduras still has areas of superbly diverse ecosystems with rich flora and fauna, among which the subtropical cloud forests that can be found in core zone of the PANACAM park area. There is much awareness of the need to preserve bio-diversity, but the most important effort needs to be aimed at the conservation and sustainable use of forests, farm land and natural resources in the buffer zone.

Proyecto Aldea Global (PAG) is a Honduran, non-profit development organization which has been working in the region of PANACAM for more than 10 years in the field of agriculture, health, youth formation, education, small business and community infrastructure programs. To realize this project, PAG has managed to secure substantial co-funding from both local and international donors. PAG is one of the few Honduran NGO’s who dispose of the necessary experience, administration capacity and human resources to assume the responsabilty of carrying out an intervention of this magnitude with an international donor.
Execution :The project will benefit the farm families living in and around the 42 communities located in the buffer zone around the Cerro Azul Meambar park. Approximately 40,000 persons will receive positive benefits through the project activities. This population is made up of mostly corn and bean farmers, small coffee farmers and a few large coffee growers

The EC-funded operations are forming a coherent structure with the activities of the following other funders :

A. Fundación Vida, is a local NGO environmental funding agency whose source of funds includes: United Nations Development Program, Inter-American Development Bank, Honduras government and Canadian government.

B. The French Embassy funds PAG's literacy program and is considering funding a Bed/Breakfast eco-tourist facilities around PANACAM in several buffer zone communities.

C. CRWRC Canada - Approved funding of health program in communities of PANACAM’s buffer zone towards the Humuya River Basin area.

D. COHDEFOR-IDB - Honduran Forestry Administration, assisted by Interamerican Development Bank.
