Title : | Imprved access to PROSEA commodity & Dissemination |
 |
Description : | The PROSEA (Plant Resources of South-East Asia) Programme was initiated in 1986, firmly established as a Network during the period 1987-1990, and is being implemented during the period 1991--2000. Due to continued support from a large number of donor agencies, the ambitious programme is still on schedule and the basic mission (handbook and databank) will be completed around the year 2000.
From 1986 until December 1996, PROSEA was able to raise NLG 16.8 million (ECU 8.00 million) in donor contributions, the EC contributions adding up to NLG 2.0 million (ECU 0.96 million) or 12% of the total.
PROSEA (Plant Resources of South East Asia) is an ongoing international programme with the objective to document and make available the existing wealth of information on the plant resources of South East Asia (approximately 6,000 species divided into 20 commodity groups) for education, extension work, research and industry.
This applied research project is not directed towards gaining new knowledge but to making the existing knowledge accessible, to disseminate it and, by doing so, to facilitate its use in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, botany and other disciplines. The existing knowledge concerns the use of the plants, their botanical properties, occurrence, ecology, husbandry, silviculture, harvesting, yields and processing, their chemical, physical, pharmaceutical and technical properties, as well as their economic importance, nutritional value if relevant, and genetic resources and breeding. Careful interpretation of the data leads to conclusions concerning the species prospects.
An improved knowledge of plant resources, in all aspects, contributes to a better use of natural resources, and this benefits the individual farmer as well as the economy as a whole. Moreover, such knowledge is essential and basic for sustainable tropical land-use system studies, for conservation of biodiversity (e.g. in tropical rainforests), and for an integrated environmental p |
Objectives : | The objectives of PROSEA are:
* to document and make available the existing wealth of information on the plant resources of South-East Asia for education, extension work, research and industry;
* to make operational a databank on the plant resources of South-East Asia;
* to publish the results in the form of an illustrated multi-volume handbook in English;
* to promote the dissemination of the information.
The target groups of the PROSEA Programme are:
* those professionally concerned with plant resources in South-East Asia and working in education, extension, research, commercial production, and policy-making (direct users);
* those in South-East Asia depending directly on plant resources, obtaining information through extension and education (indirect users).
|
Justification : | The number of plant resources in the South-East Asian region with known usefulness is estimated at 6,000-8,000 species. PROSEA has so far tentatively listed in BASELIST 5,952 species and subdivided them into 20 commodity groups (CG) according to their primary use. The species lists are continuously updated.
The Dissemination of information on the 5952 plants in South-East Asia might influence the destructive practices all over the region.
The project will contribute to the conservation and of the biodiversity, environmental protection and the promotion of the sustainable use of natural tropical resources by using information on the above plants.
In order to make the most efficient use of the information made available by the project the project focuses on those who are professionally concerned with plant resources in South-East Asia and working in education, extension, research, commercial production, and policy-making (direct users) and those who are in South-East Asia depending directly on plant resources.

Execution : | PROSEA is a Foundation under Indonesian law, with an international charter, domiciled in Bogor. It is an autonomous, non-profit, international agency, governed by a Board of Trustees.
The Founder participating institutions of PROSEA, which are represented in the Board of Trustees, are:
(1) the Centre for Research and Development in Biology, Bogor (Indonesia), under the aegis of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI); it houses the Indonesia Country Office and the Network Office South-East Asia;
(2) the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); it accommodates the Malaysia Country Office;
(3) the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, Lae (Papua New Guinea); it houses the Papua New Guinea Country Office;
(4) the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), Los Baños (the Philippines); it houses the Philippines Country Office;
(5) the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Bangkok (Thailand); it houses the Thailand Country Office;
(6) the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), Hanoi (Vietnam); it houses the Vietnam Country Office;

PROSEA has a Network Office in Bogor (Indonesia), with a staff of 12 (11.2 fte) headed by Dr. Junus Kartasubrata, coordinating the 6 above-mentioned Country Offices in South-East Asia. Staffing of the Country Offices varies from 2-4 persons per office.
The objective of the field network is to collect data at the source, to ensure optimal participation of South-East Asian institutions and scientists in the PROSEA undertaking, and to disseminate PROSEA products and derivatives.
The PROSEA Publication Office, with a staff of 10 (7.4 fte) headed by Dr. J.S. Siemonsma, is located at Wageningen Agricultural University, the Netherlands. It is responsible for the editorial activities of |
