Title :Mangrove forest management in Thailand
Description :This is a rider to an existing project (B7-5041/95/027) allowing the extension of the project by 4 months, and further inputs from the International Management specialist.

Components:

1. Resource inventory
2. Mangrove reforestation, environmental improvement and community development in 3 project areas
3. Training and information dissemination
4. Project operation
Objectives :Objectives:
The overall aim of this project is to improve the long-term sustainable utilization of mangrove forests in Southern Thailand through improving cross-sectorial coordination of development planning, and enhancing community involvement in resource-use management.
Justification :Justification of funding :
Mangrove forests are unique ecosystems and provide many benefits, and play an important role in both physical and biological systems. In Thailand, the most extensive remaining mangroves can be found in the south of the country. They have been severely degraded through over-exploitation and pollution. The government of Thailand is considering listing at least one site in Southern Thailand under the Ramsar Convention, as a wetland site of international importance. The aim of this project is to contribute to the creation of models of integrated management and conservation of tropical mangrove forests that could be used for that purpose.
Execution :The Asian Wetland Bureau (AWB), registered as a charity in the UK, has worked throughout the Asian region assisting governments and local communities to manage wetland resources for many years. Over the last ten years, together with the Prince of Songkla University in Thailand they have been working with the people of Pattani Bay (one of the sites selected for this project) on projects focusing on issues associated with mangroves. AWB has recently been approached by other NGO's and institutions to assist in finding community based solutions to solve some of the more technical environmental problems of the wetland management-related issues in the Southern Thailand region.
