B7-6201/97-15/VIII/FOR Data Collection and Analysis for Sustainable Forest Management: Linking National and International Efforts by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)

Objective : To establish policies that integrate relevant economic, environmental and social aspects of forestry.

Beneficiaries : ACP, EC, donor and other institutions

Result : A consolidated database on environmental aspects of forests and related information on conservation strategies and approaches with national statistics on the major forested ecological zones.

Activities : Collect and compile reliable and up-to-date information on. Improve the coverage, timeliness and quality of data concerning forestry. Conduct regional forestry sector outlook studies and formulate appropriate policies. Establish National Forest and National Environmental Programmes. Organise regional workshops to review and assess the availability, accuracy and completeness of current statistics. Build regional networks among national statistical correspondents to increase the exchange of information. Identify developments in forest products production, consumption and trade. Examine the implications of these developments on forest use.

Coordination: EC initiatives in the Congo Basin, IIED’s work on the private sector, the Forest Policy Study in the Caribbean Countries and the TREES programme.
