Summary provided by GTZ
The project aims at improving the living conditions of the people inhabiting areas adjoining "Shimba Hills National Park" and "Kwale Forest" through participation of these residents in the joint management of these protected areas currently executed by the counterpart agencies Kenya Wildlife Society (KWS) and the Forest Department (FD). Major objectives are: Establishment of the institutional/legal framework for the implementation of a cooperation agreement between KWS and FD at national and local (Shimba Hills/Kwale Forest) levels, promotion of the establishment of self help groups within the local population for the development of the border zones of Shimba Hills National Park and designing of an integrated management plan for the Shimba Hills/Kwale Forest area and its implementation.
