Project Background:
DFID funded a forest inventory project between 1985 and 1988 at a cost of œ1m which resulted in an inventory of 40 percent of the total area in forest reserves in the tropical high forest zone. In 1989 DFID began a forest inventory and management project which is a continuation of the first project at a cost of œ3.7m over 5 years. The purpose of the project is to provide the basis for sustained yield management of the tropical high forest. DFID is involved in the following: a) Strengthening the Working Plans Branch of the Planning Department in Kumasi b) Forest inventory inside the reserves and permanent sample plots c) Forest inventory and management outside the reserves d) Plantation inventory and rehabilitation e) Strengthening of tropical high forest management. The Forest Ecology and Research Project is designed to begin to address this need by conducting research and strengthening the institutional capacity to continue to carry out the research which will be required for many years to come.

Project Objectives:
To strengthen silviculture expertise in Ghanaian forestry institutions. To establish through research a better understanding of timber species.

Intended Outputs:
Three staff qualified to PhD level. Research results. Database of forest ecology.
