Project Background:
The Pilot Programme to conserve the Brazilian rain forest comprises an integrated set of projects intended to contribute to a reduction in the rate of deforestation of Brazil's rain forest in a manner consistent with the sustainable development of the area's human and natural resources. The initiative is fully supported by the UK. DFID have made broad pledges towards the wider programme and to specific component projects. DFID's scope for new involvement at this point is limited given the existing bilateral commitment (t 13.5m) to Amazon Forestry projects in place before the commencement of the Pilot Programme.

Project Objectives:
The project provides a consultant to participate in the World Bank led appraisal mission which will consider the Science Centres of Excellence and Directed Research programme components of the G7 Pilot Programme in Brazil
