Project Objectives:
To survey and characterise the indigenous aromatic plants of Para and to assess the potential of their essential oil constituents in industrial, medicinal and insect control applications. To establish in Para a germplasm bank and nurseries of Brazilian rosewood (Aniba rosedora) for conservation purposes by germplasm collection from wild populations to evaluate systems of propagation and of management for formal cultivation to identify elite trees for future selection and multiplication and to make preliminary assessment of the potential for leaf oil production and sale as an alternative to destructive heartwood oil production. To investigate the potential for the production of safrole-rich essential oils from the forest shrubs, Piper hispidinervium and P. callosum by means of propagation, field management, processing and marketing trials. To evaluate the prospects for the economic production of rosewood and Piper species in small-holder, mixed cropping systems in Para and, if the conclusion is positive, specify a developmental pathway.

Intended Outputs:
Project reports and publications in the scientific literature. Evaluation of the development potential of Aniba, Piper and other species. Establishment of research facilities in Brazil. Brazilian staff trained in research methodologies
