Project Objectives:
To improve agronomic and animal research programming through the development of
methods responding to the agricultural needs of the smallholder sector.
Intended Outputs:
Agronomic Research:
(a) Improving the capacity of IRA Directorate in research programming.
Administrative and financial management.
Preparation of technical documents and extension materials.
Including construction, rehabilitation and equipping of office facilities, construction and
equipping of staff houses and acquisition of vehicles and equipment.
(b) Improving the ability of IRA regional research centres and their stations and antennae in:
* carrying out experimental work under improved management and technical procedures,
with an emphasis on food crop research;
* development of a farming systems approach and effective liaison with extension services.
(c) Supporting priority disciplinary research activities, including:
Crop Research
Forestry Research
(d) Carrying out a training programme, including seminars, granting of fellowships for
post-graduate studies, specialised study tours abroad and local training.
Animal Research
(a) Improving the capacity of IRZ Directorate in research planning and management, through
formulation of a long-term research strategy that meets the needs of livestock producers.
(b) Expanding research at Bambui and Wakwa Centres to solve problems faced by livestock
producers and to develop improved livestock management systems acceptable to said
producers.
(c) Supporting fishery research activities, through carrying-out of surveys and collection of
baseline data.
(d) Carrying out a training programme, including seminars, granting of fellowships for
post-graduate studies, specialised study tours abroad and local training.
Joint Facilities:
(a) Construction, equipping and operation of a library and documentation centre at
Nkolbisson.
(b) Construction, equipping and operation of a computer centre at Nkolbisson for the joint
use of IRA and IRZ staff.
