Project Background:
DFID has supported the Limbe Botanic Garden and Rainforest Genetic Conservation Project (LBGRGCP) since June 1988. Its goal was to encourage the conservation and sustainable use of tropical rain forests in Cameroon by the establishment of reserves, and by the renovation and development of the Limbe Botanic Garden (LBG). The end-of-project review concluded that the physical rehabilitation of LBG had largely been achieved, but that further work was required to develop its activities in science and conservation, and specifically the link between LBG and conservation work on Mount Cameroon. The need to continue work to establish reserves in Etinde and Mabeta-Moliwe, for further biodiversity surveys, and for practical projects which benefit villagers around the proposed reserves, was also stressed.

Project Objectives:
To secure long term conservation of biodiversity and rainforest genetic resources and strengthen the role of local communities in managing forests and related resources.

Intended Outputs:
Limbe Botanic Garden established as a semi-autonomous conservation, education and research centre.

Participatory approaches to biodiversity conservation developed, implemented and evaluated.

Alternative economic activities piloted and evaluated, and incentives strategy prepared.

Protected areas agreed and established.

Management plan agreed for Mokoko Forest Reserve.

Forest conservation strategy and proposal for next phase of project prepared.

Strengthened project implementing capacity.
