Project Background:
The project will be based in Licanten, an area of coastal drylands, characterised by its hilly landscape. The climate is mediterranean in nature with reasonable rainfall levels in winter and a very dry summer season lasting from December to the end of March. Soil quality is poor, rocky and highly eroded (about 70 of the land experiences heavy caving and ditches due to erosion). Poor drainage and soil fertility compound the problem. The hilly areas are used primarily for raising cattle and for forestry, while the pains dedicated to the production of cereals and meadows. This background of a harsh and isolated environment has led to povetry and lack of opportunity for many members of the communities in Licanten, and the project aims to tackle the inter-related problems of poverty, poor, productivity, lack of technical expertise and access to credit.

Project Objectives:
To increase the incomes of small producers.

Intended Outputs:
To assist development of Procedures Association and of women's groups. To enable communities to access local funds. To provide technical assistance and access to credit. To increase family income by developing agriculture and starting microprojects.
