economically and biologically sustainable production in Chinese fir plantations. The
immediate objectives are: To assist the Chinese Academy of Forestry coordinate a research
programme to understand the social and biological processes leading to yield decline in
Chinese fir plantations To identify and, if feasible within the project timetable, promote
changes in site preparation and maintenance practice that will raise the economic and
financial return to fir production while not disadvantaging the local communities who are
dependent on forest farming and tree by-products. NRI are involved in the UK Management
Support Team which aims to provide a means through which support can be given to
consultants either with the form of direct, or by reference to particular publications or experts
with specialist knowledge and provide a forum to review progress and achievements and
recommend improvements to the consultants. The five Chinese scientists will visit NRI from
18-20 August 1993 to finalise plans for the chinese experiments and to visit NRI laboratories.
A consultant will attend the final project workshop in China in 1996.
