Project Objectives:
The objectives of the project were: To provide data to enable a sustainable yield policy for
extracting timber from forest reserves to be fully formulated, at the same time maintaining the
forest for its rich floristic and environmental values and to help climatic stability. To establish
an inventory unit, capable of running continuous forest inventory and thereby the ability to
provide data on area, volume, species, size, classes and regeneration consistent with medium
and long term planning objectives of the Forest Department. Permanent sample plots will also
be measured to provide data on the increment of the forest. To train local staff both in Ghana
and abroad so that they can take on the forestry inventory.
Intended Outputs:
An inventory of 500 000ha of forest reseve Development of a planning system and harvesting
schedules consistent with sustained yield principles Establishment within Forestry Dept., of a
guide to aid in tree identification To provide recommedations on silvicultural treatment of the
forest. Analysis of data from permanent sample plots (PSP).
