Project Background:
The project is seeking to improve peoples livelihoods in the Panchamal District of north
eastern Gujarat by expanding the area of land under productive and sustainable land use
systems while at the same time benefitting the environment. Villagers will work to to build
18 lift irrigation schemes, 21 check dams and plant 12 million trees. In the process, and with
additional investments in soil/water conservation about 3 000 hectares of land will also be
rehabilitated. The project is expected to triple and sustain the incomes of families in 48
villages.
Project Objectives:
The project objective is to enable the beneficiaries to meet their needs for increased incomes,
and more secure and sustainable livelihoods, through the following measures lift irrigation
schemes and check dams to increase agricultural production outside the rainy season. a social
forestry programme to generate valuable forest products as well as helping to conserve
soil/water. small scale soil and water conservation measures to help rehabilitate degraded
lands/contribute to increases in agricultural productivity.
Intended Outputs:
The intended outputs of the project are through the construction of irrigation schemes/dams
to enable sustainable agriculture on some 3 000 hectares of land, also over a three year period
to plant 12 million trees (of varying species/growth rates) which woul cover an area of some
17 500 hectares
