Project Objectives:
There are two objectives for this consultancy: To evaluate two projects in which DFID was involved during the 1970s in the rainfed agricultural sector of Madhya Pradesh namely, `The Indo-UK Dryland Farming Operational Project' and `The FAO/UK/Hindustan Fertiliser Corporation-Dryland Farming Fertiliser Education Project'. In light of the evaluation study and information concerning current activity in the sector, to recommend an appropriate strategy for further DFID involvement in Dryland Farming in selected areas of Madhya Pradesh to be funded from the Poverty Alleviation Programme. The consultants will assess the impact, replicability and lessons of the two dryland farming projects. Specifically tasks will include the assessment of the socio-economic and agro-ecological representativeness of the project sites for the Malawa Plateau and black soils area ex-post evaluation of the socio-economic and agricultural impact of the different project components and, to assess the extent to which different categories of farmers within and outside the project areas have adopted, modified and maintained the technologies promoted by the project.
