Project Background:
The Forest Research Project will contribute towards Government of Indonesia's (GOI) policy objective to manage its forests sustainably by the year 2000 by improving the information upon which forest management decision making is based and to strengthen the Forest Research Institute's capacity to plan, manage and implement forest research and continue to improve this information base.

Project Objectives:
To provide forest managers with a broader range of management and silvicultural interventions based on research results to advance the ability to manage lowland dipterocarp forest as a sustainable and productive resource and hence contribute to its conservation as a biosphere asset and its maximum contribution to the Indonesian economy.

Intended Outputs:
Capacity of Belai Penelition Kehutanan Samarinda to plan and manage research for KPHP implementation stregthened.


Appropriate research infrastructure established in Central Kalimantan.


Computerised Model for growth and yield estimation of managed Dipterocarp forest developed and in use by Balai Penelitian Kehutanan (BPK) staff, dinas, Kanwil and concession holders staff in pilot Kesatuan Penelitian Hutan Produksi Forest Management Units (KBHP).


Clearing house for growth and yield data from Kalimantan established within Balai Penelitian Kehutanan (BPK) Samarinda, as a model for national clearing house.


Tree identification manual for economically important non-dipterocarp species of Central Kalimantan.


Published recommendation on measures to maximise recovery of dipterocarp forest following logging.
