Project Background:
The oil price collapse in 1986 and the subsequent decline in Government revenue had a severe adverse effect on economic growth in Indonesia. The fifth five-year development programme (Repelita V) aims to reverse this trend and return to higher growth rates. A key part of Government's economic strategy is diversification away from over-reliance on oil and gas, and development instead of the agriculture for such development exists. A solid understanding of the physical base is essential of Indonesia is to achieve co-ordinated, sustainable, cost-effective and profitable application of scarce development funds for rural development. By general consent the RePPProT studies represent the base source of information available for regional and national land resource planning in Indonesia. Disseminating the results of the RePPProT studies by ensuring that land use planning at all levels are aware of and able to use the data available when formulating development plans would therefore make a direct and important contribution to the achievement of the Government's development strategy.

Project Objectives:
The broad objective of this project is to facilitate the promotion of accurate and realistic land use for rural development particularly in the Outer Islands with the further aim of highlighting development priorities. The immediate objectives are: disseminate the results of the RePPraT studies (8 Regional Review and a National Overview, through a series of seminars and training workshops for land use planners and decision makers at national, provincial and district level. Integrate the RePPProT maps into the National Geographic Information System being developed at BAKOSURTANAL.
