Project Background:
Project activities are aimed at mitigating the problem of fire damage to forests, and tropical moist forest in particular. Fire, from both man and natural causes, results in major losses of forest resources in all global ecosystems, most especially in areas where humans are active such as, logging and the forest agriculture interface. It is recognised at government Minister (Forestry, Environment, Transport) level in Indonesia (as in certain other countries) that there is need for comprehensive information on the scale of the fire problem for policy formulation, development of strategy, planning counter - measures and mobilising resources.

Project Objectives:
Improved strategies for tropical forest management developed and promoted.

Intended Outputs:
Fully operational NOAA satellite fire-detection system developed, tested and promoted in Indonesia, with local staff trained in system operation and information use. Improved technical capability for converting fire data into useful information and disseminating it to users in real-time. Established a social/institutional framework for use of fire information to improve forest management, and to minimise fire impact on logged and protected forests. Comprehensive uptake path with practical implementation procedures for operators, managers and logging concessionaires.
