Project Objectives:
The long term objective is to contribute to a reduction in the rate of deforestation in Embu, Meru and Isiolo districts through the introduction of fuelwood conserving systems. The short term objectives are: Develop and implement a sustainable programme to disseminate and maintain fuel-saving cooking systems to institutions throughout Embu district, where large-scale catering is or will be undertaken. Promote and support the establishment of sustainable fuel-wood producing units in institutions where fuel-saving cooking systems are being/have been installed. Pilot the use of a kitchen energy management and tree husbandry skills training package in schools, training centres and with extension groups in one division of Embu district. Identify further wood utilising systems (excluding domestic systems) prevalent in Embu district where improved energy conversion may lead to significant reductions in the rate of the tree felling for fuel, and devise and promote improved systems. Prepare a second phase to extend these initial activities to other areas of Embu, Meru and Isiolo districts and based on the experience gained elsewhere, consider the desirability and means of incorporating a domestic stove component into the project.

Intended Outputs:
Recruit train and equip team of craftsmen which will be based in the district for the purpose of installing institutional cooking systems.

Ensure the availability of an infrastructure to support the activities of the team of craftsmen.

To promote the cooking systems among institutions where large scale catering is provided.

To install improved cooking systems in institutions throughout the district.

To provide supervision/support for the team of craftsmen to ensure that installation work, training and service contracts are operated to acceptable standards.

To explore the feasibility of working wirh banks and/or other funding institurions.

Devise and develop a structured fuel-wood producing package for use by the staff of institutions operating fuel-saving cooking systems.

Establish effective fuel-wood producing units.
