Project Background:
The 1989-93 Development Plan recognises the threat posed by deforestation for catchment
protection, wildlife, biodiversity, agriculture and tourism. The project will support the
national objectives of developing and enforcing guidelines for the sustainable exploitation of
forest resources, providing for the effective management and conservation of forests,
promoting social forestry, and improving forest cover mapping and monitoring. The project is
also supportive of the forest programmes outlined in the District Development Plans for the
five Districts involved in the pilot project activities.
Project Objectives:
The wider objectives are to conserve the biodiversity , ecological services and productivity
of indigenous closed forests, and to improve the welfare of poor people hitherto dependent on
the forest for their livelihood. The immediate objectives are: to prepare conservation
management recommendations to be included in the Forestry Masterplan To prepare pilot
projects for the Mau, Kakamega and Arabuko-Sokoke forests including the inventory of all
the natural forest To improve forest protection, and begin a process of participatory
conservation in these areas To set up a monitoring system covering all indigenous forests
and, To strengthen local research institutions.
Intended Outputs:
Ecological, timber, non-timber and socio-economic inventories. Ranked conservation
priorities. Forest management recommendations. Forest conservation and socio-economic
proposals. Environmental monitoring and evaluation baseline. GIS forest monitoring system.
Report for Master Plan and Forestry IV Mid-Term Review. Applied research reports.
Increased patrol coverage and frequency. Increased seedling output. Improved FD plantation.
