Project Objectives:
The purpose of the EMI Dryland Farming Project (DFP) is to identify, promote and
implement measures that are technically, economically and socially viable with a view to
achieving a greater reliability of food crop production in the Embu and Meru Districts. The
project will detail: Farming Systems Survey to provide an understanding of farmers
perceptions and aspirations and identify key constraints to present farm operations. Soil
conservation. Applied agronomic research through the establishment of eight trial sites (four
in Embu and Meru respectively) to compare single crop legume yields impact on food crop
yield of interplanting single rows of trees or pigeon pea the effect of single season bare fallow
and plant spacing on yields to compare yields of sorghum and cowpea varieties planted dry or
after the first rains and, evaluate different means for conserving or enhancing soil moisture.
Seed bulking following the establishment of which improved varieties are in demand.
Irrigation rehabilitation and water conservation. The programme will also cover the Isiolo
Livestock Development Project.
