Project Background:
The Estate Extension Service Trust Project co-finances a country-wide extension service for
freehold and leasehold farms (estates) providing advice on the production of cash and food
crops, livestock, soil and water conservation, and afforestation.
Project Objectives:
The objectives of the project, via the provision of two COS are: To increase the contribution
of the estate sub-sector to the Malawian economy consistent with conserving the natural
resource base and thereby supporting economic growth in rural areas. To increase the
utilisation of the estate sector land resource base. To preserve the environment via soil and
water conservation and the reduction of deforestation. To improve the quality and yield of
burley and flue-cured tobacco from the estates. To broaden the export base by crop
diversification . The mid-term review (T0457) was carried out between 24 April and 4 May
1993 by Mr John Barrett.
Intended Outputs:
Extension materials on tobacco, soil and water conservation, farm management and soil and
water conservation produced and distributed by mid 1991 to 1000 estates. Other crops would
be included in 91/92 Schedule of meetings, open days and training courses by mid 1991.
Estate extension service providing advice and in regular contact with 75 of tobacco estates by
the end of 1993. WID consultancy during 1991.
