Project Background:
Mountainous ecosystems (mostly comprising areas defined as remote) are particularly fragile
and in need of protection, whilst government services are less available than in other parts of
Nepal. The project will address the inter-related problems of lack of access, soil erosion,
deforestation, over-grazing, low agricultural productivity and lack of community organization
in such areas. A strong users' group organisation component is central to the project strategy,
therefore the project will work only with well-motivated communities that are interested in
managing their own development activities. The results of this project should enable all
participants to better plan and implement further, longer term programs for the effective
fulfillment of basic needs for the people of the remote areas of Nepal.
Project Objectives:
The wider objective is to strengthen the self-reliance of communities in remote districts to
fulfill their Basic Needs. The immediate objectives are: To increase capability of their
communities in remote districts to identify, plan and implement development activities by the
end of the project. To increase the agricultural productivity of participant communities in
remote districts, to increase incomes, by the end of the project. To increase the safe access to
trade, agriculture and employment opportunities of partcipant communities in remote
districts, to increase incomes, by the end of the project. To develop test and document
strategies for promoting self-help community development in remote districts by the end of
the project.
Intended Outputs:
To assist communities in remote districts to build trail bridges and irrigation systems as
community entry points. To assist these communities to identify and implement natural
resources management activities such as irrigation, construction and management,
agroforestry, soil conservation, pasture management and drinking water supplies. To
strengthen users groups capacity to sustain the development process and to train user group
members to implement the project. To promote indigenous skills and low-input technologies
that can be implemented, maintained and replicated by communities with minimal external
assistance.
