Project Background:
The Government of Nepal, Department of Roads (DOR), is to establish a Geo-Environmental Unit in early 1994. An important part of the work of the unit will be its responsibility for encouraging and facilitating the appropriate application of bio-engineering techniques in slope stabilitation in the road sector. It is envisaged that the programme will be managed by DOR with work being undertaken by local contractors as far as possible. DFID is to undertake a Road Maintenance Project (RMP) in Nepal which will include assistance to the DOR in a number of areas. One component of the RMP will support the development of bio-engineering techniques by the Geo-Environmental Unit by providing a Bio-Engineering Adviser supported by a number of short term specialist inputs together with limited funds for practical applications.

Project Objectives:
The objectives of the project are: To identify the practical range of alternatives for providing and sustaining low cost vehicular access in the hills of Nepal To advise on how the capacity to develop sustainable hill access may be maintained.

Intended Outputs:
To produce a report from the visit to Nepal. To advise bioengineers in Nepal and DFIDSEA.
