Project Objectives:
To provide NOAA derived information to institutions involved in natural resource management and planning

(a) MARENA (MARENA = Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (in Spanish))

(b) UNA and INETER


Sustainable management of renewable natural resources, facilitated through a cost effective environment monitoring service.

Intended Outputs:
NOAA data captured, processed and archived by local personnel.


Staff trained in data interpretation and validation.


Equipment installed at INETER and UNA and staff given basic training.


Establish a sustainable remote sensing capability in MARENA, providing information to institutions involved in natural resource management, and planning.


A remote sensing unit established in MARENA, based on direct capture and use of NOAA satellite data.


MARENA staff trained in data capture, processing, validation and interpretation.


Needs defined and priorities developed for dissemination of information to MARENA forestry staff and INETER, UNA and other government departments.


The information needs of forestry and others serviced by the remote sensing unit in MARENA.


Date archive and reference data sets established.


Institutional roles and mechanisms for determination of environmental priorities appraised and procedures for increasing utilisation of monitoring data in planning developed.


Social and economic aspects of fire outbreak and control appraised.


Procedures for the participation of forest dwellers in fire management and forest planning developed.
