Project Objectives:
The objective of the Natural Resources Sector Study (September-October 1992) was to carry
out a desk study review of the problems and opportunities in the natural resources sector in
Nigeria. NRI will produce a short synopsis document (maximum length 20 pages plus any
tables, graphs and diagrams). The synopsis will outline the current state of the NR sector in
Nigeria involving a discussion on agro-ecological zones, land use, cropping patterns, crop
yields, market demand and marketing and crop exports and imports. The synopsis will outline
current trends of NR exploitation, including changes in land use demand, the main economic
reforms which have taken place that affect the NR sector and their effects, and implications of
demographic growth. The synopsis will also discuss the environmental and social effects of
current NR exploitation. The synopsis will identify major constraints on effective NR
management and crop production, including economic, institutional, social and technical
constraints with particular reference to the role of women in the NR sector and to the
alleviation of poverty. As part of the 1994 review of the the RNR sector in Nigeria, with a
view to developing an updated strategy for future development assistance to the sector. Prior
to the review, a series of background papers are being prepared to help guide the team. One
of these papers is on social development issues. The Social Development Desk Study (May
1994) will compile and review a selection of the literature relevant to social aspects of RNR
in Nigeria, as a background paper for the RNR sector review mission.
Intended Outputs:
Natural Resources Sector Study - short synopsis document Social Development Study - a
concise briefing paper for the RNR strategy review team outlining key social issues of
relevance to DFID's future assistance to the sector, with particular reference to gender,poverty
and participation aspects
