Project Background:
The Benue Agriculture Project concept was developed during a scoping msision to Benue
State in February/March 1996. The project's main objective is to increase productive
capacity among resource poor farmers through improved ability to generate and adopt
appropriate techniques. The project will address this constraint by working with the
Co-operative Extension Centre at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, to make rural
research and development in Benue State more responsive to poor farmers' needs. To ensure
stakeholder participation, project activities will be agreed at a project development workshop
to be held in Makurdi at the start of August 1996. Stakeholders will use PCM methods to
construct a project memorandum to be submitted to WNAD by the end of August. The team
responsible for the workshop will comprise five persons, with skills including: PCM

assessment and RNR research management.
