Project Objectives:
In 1982 a request was made by the Somali Ministry of National Planning to DFID for assistance in this sector. Specifically, assistance was sought to examine the methods of charcoal production . The objectives of the study were to : Identify the major charcoal-producing areas in Southern Somalia carry out an inventory to determine the amount of available charcoal from these bushlands study the regeneration of the two main species used in charcoal manufacture , Acacia bussei and A senegal evaluate the present state of the bushland and identify the effects of charcoal exploitation , determine the benefits obtained from the bushland by the three communities present, ie the settled rural population, nomadic pastoralists and the charcoal workers determine the legality of customary rights of land, tree tenure and associated issues and, advise on the management of the bushlands.
