Project Background:
Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania, have established silvicultural trials
in which Pinus patula and Cupressus lusitanica are being planted in replicated plots with
initial spacing form 1.13 to 3.14m. Survival and rate of growth are determined. OFI were
asked to co-operate by determining wood and pulping properties and the degree to which they
are influenced by initial spacing. Very little is known of the effect of any silvicultural
treatment on pulp properties and it was agreed to use material from a planned, replicated trial
to generate some information.
Project Objectives:
The objectives of this project in the current year to collect material and to determine wood
density. The project will be transferred to the Wood Science Department of the University of
Wales, Bangor, who will determine morphological and chemical characteristics of the wood
and its pulping properties.
