Project Background:
The Forest Industry in Zimbabwe has developed to the point that it produces rough sawn
timber, seasonal timber, surfaced and moulded timber, preservation (creosote and CCA),
fingerjointing, glue-laminated members, sliced veneer, rotary veneer, plywood, blockboard,
particle board (Bison and clipboard), stone ground pulp, NSSC pulp and papers and boards.
Exotic pine and eucalyptus and various indigenous species are used as furnish. Secondary
manufacturing is increasing in response to housing and furniture needs. The market generally
collapsed following Independence, but has now rebounded to pre 1981 levels. There are
increasing constraints on the industry due to factors such as age and condition of mills and
plants, foreign exchange shortages, and the lag in recognising and adopting technical
innovations and developments.
Project Objectives:
The objective of the project is to establish, adjacent to the Forest Industrial Training Centre, a
research facility and staff to investigate and develop forest products.
