Project Background
The Forest Reserves in Malawi lie distant from the main concentrations of population. Whilst some still contain good quality woodland, most have been degraded by lack of finance for management. There is extensive but more degraded woodland outside these Reserves, some of which is on Estate land. There is thus a large area over which the findings of the project could be applied and this would affect the majority of the population. The most recent Forestry Policy draft (MG 1995) identifies the potential role and the need to involve communities. Such procedures have also been recognised in Zimbabwe but the technical prescriptions, beyond those for controlled burning, are not yet developed.
Project Objectives
To address the role of miombo woodland as a contributor of forest products and services to rural communities in Malawi and regionally addressing both demand and supply.
Intended Outputs
- Silvicultural and forest management prescriptions for miombo woodland.
- Methodology and sample studies for demand for forest products and services by individuals and communities.
- Guidelines for planning Village Forest Areas, etc.
- Model community forestry plans.
- Dissemination of findings.
