Project Background

This project aims at introducing productive forest management for sustained-yield timber production in Tapajos, one of Brazil's National Forests (Flona), while taking into account the relevant technical, environmental and social elements. Tapajos is the first Amazonian Flona where this has been attempted. This is a pilot, demonstration and trial project. Therefore, some of the operations cannot be exactly specified in advance. Some of the methods and experience developed here will be applicable in other Flonas, but others will not be Replicable and will be modified to suit different conditions. Following the existing Management Plan, this project includes the organisation and supervision of timber-harvesting of 5000 ha, to be carried out by licensed contractors over 5 years. It will also cover sample plots and other monitoring, some silvicultural treatments, protection of the whole Flona (600 000 ha), maintenance of roads, buildings and vehicles, and some new infrastructure. This phase builds on nearly twenty years of research experience, and will in turn be the start of a long-term operational management programme. It will also serve as a guide for initiating management in other National Forests. The project will be administered by IBAMA, guided by a Steering Committee including representatives of ITTO and DFID. UK inputs will be managed by the Oxford Forestry Institute. Tapajos is situated near the city of Santarem, beside a large branch of the Amazon, with excellent access to industries and markets, in an area not prone to serious agricultural settlement. The operational experience gained here will be valuable not only for the future management of Tapajos, but for forest management throughout Amazonia.

Project Objectives

To promote operational management of forest reserves in Amazonia for sustainable production of timber and non-timber products.
